The Design

Taq-e Bostan

At the foot of a mountain on the edge of Kermanshah, beside a clear spring-fed pool, the Sasanian kings carved a series of arches and reliefs between the 4th and 7th centuries CE. They show royal investitures, kings on horseback and lively hunting scenes full of boats, elephants and musicians, among the finest works of Sasanian art.

The Behistun Inscription

On a cliff along the ancient road between Mesopotamia and the Iranian plateau, Darius the Great had his victories recorded around 520 BCE in three languages: Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian. In the 19th century, scholars led by Henry Rawlinson used it to decipher cuneiform script, which is why it is often compared to the Rosetta Stone. Behistun has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006.
