Some places don’t just belong to a country. They belong to history. Persepolis, the ancient ceremonial capital of the Persian Empire, is one of them, and this Fars t-shirt carries it with you wherever you go.
This unisex t-shirt brings together the most iconic symbols of Fars Province: the towering columns of Persepolis, the rugged peaks of the Zagros Mountains and the timeless Persian cypress. It’s soft, breathable and made for everyday wear, and it’s a quiet way to say “this is where we come from.”
The Design
Front: the ruins of Persepolis framed by Achaemenid columns, with the Zagros Mountains and Persian cypress trees behind them, finished with the name FARS.
Back: a large, detailed Achaemenid column capital rising above Persepolis, surrounded by ornamental Persian motifs and the words FARS · IRAN.
The Story Behind Persepolis (Takht-e Jamshid)
Around 518 BCE, Darius the Great began building a breathtaking palace complex on a vast stone terrace at the foot of the Mountain of Mercy (Kuh-e Rahmat), about 60 km northeast of today’s Shiraz. The Greeks called it Persepolis, “the city of the Persians.” Iranians know it as Takht-e Jamshid, the Throne of Jamshid, named after a legendary king of Persian mythology.
Over the next century, Darius, his son Xerxes and their successors turned it into the ceremonial heart of the Achaemenid Empire, the largest empire the ancient world had yet seen. Visitors entered through the monumental Gate of All Nations and climbed to the Apadana, a grand audience hall supported by 72 stone columns, each around 20 meters tall.
The staircases of the Apadana are covered in some of the finest reliefs of the ancient world: delegations from across the empire, from Egypt to India, bringing gifts to the king. Many historians believe these scenes celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year, a tradition Iranians still celebrate today.
In 330 BCE, Alexander of Macedon set Persepolis on fire. Yet even in ruins, it remains one of the most powerful symbols of Iranian civilization. In 1979, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Achaemenid Column
The columns of Persepolis were crowned with remarkable capitals carved in the form of double-headed bulls, lions and the mythical Homa bird. They are instantly recognizable and have become a lasting emblem of Persian architecture and royal power.
The Persian Cypress (Sarv)
Evergreen and always standing tall, the cypress has been a symbol of life, freedom and resilience in Persian art for thousands of years. Rows of cypress trees are carved into the very staircases of Persepolis, and they still appear in Persian carpets, miniatures and poetry today.
Fars: Where the Name “Persia” Began
Fars, ancient Pars, is the homeland of the Persians and the origin of the name “Persia.” Beyond Persepolis, it is home to Pasargadae and the tomb of Cyrus the Great, the rock reliefs of Naqsh-e Rostam, and Shiraz, the city of the poets Hafez and Saadi.
