Five thousand years ago, in southeastern Iran, a city flourished where people made one of the world’s oldest artificial eyes and drew what may be the first animation in history. This Sistan and Baluchestan t-shirt celebrates that city and the stunning landscapes of the region.

The Design

Front: the ancient ruins of Shahr-e Sukhteh and the wetlands of Lake Hamun, finished with the province name.

Back: the Makran coast and the strange, eroded miniature mountains of Chabahar, framed in Persian ornament.

Shahr-e Sukhteh: The Burnt City

Founded around 3200 BCE, Shahr-e Sukhteh was one of the largest cities of the Bronze Age in Asia. Archaeologists have found remarkable treasures there: an artificial eye made around 2,800 BCE, an earthenware bowl with images of a goat that seem to move when spun, often called the oldest animation in the world, and one of the oldest known backgammon-like games. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.

Lake Hamun

On the border with Afghanistan, the wetlands of Hamun were once one of the largest freshwater lakes in the region, full of birds and reed boats, and linked in Persian legend with the heroes of Sistan, the homeland of Rostam.

The Makran Coast and the Miniature Mountains

Along the Sea of Oman, the Makran coast offers quiet beaches and dramatic cliffs. Near Chabahar, wind and rain have carved soft clay hills into fantastic shapes known as the “miniature mountains,” or the “Martian mountains,” because they look like another planet.
