The Design

Front: Naqsh-e Jahan Square with the Ali Qapu Palace and the domes of Isfahan, finished with the city name.

Back: the arches of Si-o-se Pol reflected in the Zayandeh Rud, surrounded by intricate Safavid tile patterns.

Naqsh-e Jahan Square

When Shah Abbas I made Isfahan the capital of the Safavid Empire at the end of the 16th century, he built one of the largest city squares in the world: Naqsh-e Jahan, “the Image of the World.” Surrounded by the Shah Mosque, the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, the Ali Qapu Palace and the entrance to the Grand Bazaar, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Ali Qapu Palace

On the western side of the square stands Ali Qapu, the royal palace from which the Shah watched polo matches and celebrations. Its upper floor holds the famous Music Room, with walls carved into delicate shapes of vases and cups that improved the sound.

Si-o-se Pol and the Zayandeh Rud

Built in the early 17th century, Si-o-se Pol (“the Bridge of Thirty-Three Arches”) stretches across the Zayandeh Rud, the river that gave life to Isfahan. For centuries, people have gathered beneath its arches to talk, sing and watch the sunset.

Safavid Art

The ornaments in this design are inspired by the tiles of Safavid Isfahan: flowing arabesques, floral patterns and the deep blues and golds that made the city famous.
