The Design

The Alborz Mountains

The Alborz range stretches for around 900 km across northern Iran, forming a natural wall between the Caspian Sea and the Iranian plateau. Its northern slopes are covered in lush forests, while its southern side faces the drier plateau where cities like Karaj and Tehran sit. The range is also home to Mount Damavand, the highest peak in Iran.

Alborz Province, with its capital Karaj, takes its name from these mountains. It became a separate province in 2010 and today is one of the gateways from the capital to the green north of Iran.

The Amir Kabir (Karaj) Dam and Its Lake

High in the valley of the Karaj River, the Amir Kabir Dam, completed in the early 1960s, created a long turquoise reservoir surrounded by steep mountain slopes. The lake supplies water to Tehran and Karaj and has become one of the most photographed views of the Alborz.

The Legendary Chalus Road

Built in the 1930s, the Karaj–Chalus road cuts straight through the heart of the Alborz, passing the high Kandovan Tunnel before descending through forests toward the Caspian coast. It is regularly listed among the most beautiful mountain roads in the world, and for generations of Iranians it has meant weekends, family trips and the first sight of the green north.
