Rudkhan Castle: The Fortress of a Thousand Steps

Southwest of the town of Fuman, Rudkhan Castle stretches along a forested ridge, its brick and stone walls following the shape of the mountain. Its origins are often traced back to the Sasanian era, and it was rebuilt in later centuries, with most of what we see today dating from the Seljuk period.

Reaching it means climbing a long stone stairway through the forest, which is why Iranians call it the “castle of a thousand steps.” On foggy days, when clouds drift through its towers, it feels like a scene from a fairy tale.

The Hyrcanian Forests

The forests along the Caspian coast of Iran are among the oldest in the world, with roots going back some 25 to 50 million years. Home to rare trees, leopards and countless birds, they were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019.

Gilan

Gilan is famous for its rain, its rice fields, its tea gardens and its food, and for misty waterfalls hidden in green valleys, like the ones in this design.
