The Design

The Great Wall of Gorgan: The Red Snake

Built by the Sasanian Empire around the 5th and 6th centuries CE, the Great Wall of Gorgan stretched for roughly 195 km, from the shores of the Caspian Sea toward the mountains of northeastern Iran. It was made of red fired bricks, which is why it is also known as the Red Snake.

Along its length stood more than thirty forts, and a canal ran beside it. Historians believe it protected the empire from nomadic invaders from the north, and it is considered one of the most ambitious military building projects of the ancient world.

The Hyrcanian Forests

South of the wall rise the ancient Hyrcanian forests, among the oldest forests on Earth, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Golestan is also home to Golestan National Park, the oldest national park in Iran.

The Northern Plains

To the north spread the open plains of the Turkmen Sahra, a land of horses, wide skies and rich traditions that gives Golestan its unique character.
