The Design

Khorheh: The Columns in the Field

Near the town of Mahallat, two tall stone columns rise from the ground at Khorheh. They are the remains of a large building from the Seleucid or Parthian era, more than two thousand years old, and the site was among the first in Iran to be studied by archaeologists. Their simple, elegant capitals show the meeting of Greek and Iranian styles after Alexander’s time.

Haftad Gholleh: The Seventy Peaks

Near Arak, the protected area of Haftad Gholleh (“Seventy Peaks”) is a maze of mountains, valleys and springs, home to wild goats, wild sheep and the rare Persian leopard. Its name comes from the many summits that rise one after another across the landscape.

Markazi Province

Markazi, “the Central Province,” with its capital Arak, is known for its fine carpets, the historic town of Ashtian, and as the birthplace of many Iranian scholars and statesmen.
