The Design

Arg-e Bam: The World’s Largest Adobe Citadel

Rising above the oasis town of Bam, the Arg-e Bam is the largest adobe (mud-brick) structure in the world. Its origins reach back more than two thousand years, and it flourished as a stop on the trade routes between Iran, Central Asia and India. Most of what visitors see today dates from the Safavid era.

In 2003 a devastating earthquake struck Bam and destroyed much of the citadel. Since then it has been patiently rebuilt, and in 2004 Bam and its cultural landscape were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Palm Groves of Bam

Around the citadel spread green palm groves fed by qanats, ancient underground water channels. Bam is famous for its dates, among the most delicious in the world.

The Kaluts of Shahdad

In the Lut Desert near Shahdad, wind has carved huge sand and clay ridges called kaluts, some taller than a ten-story building. The Lut Desert, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016, is also known for recording some of the hottest land surface temperatures on Earth.

Shazdeh Garden of Mahan

Near Mahan, a green garden appears in the middle of the desert: the Shazdeh Garden, built in the late 19th century, with a long line of terraced fountains flowing toward its entrance. It is one of the gardens inscribed by UNESCO as part of The Persian Garden.
