Ferdowsi and the Shahnameh

Born in Tus around 940 CE, Abolqasem Ferdowsi devoted more than thirty years of his life to the Shahnameh, the “Book of Kings.” With around 50,000 couplets, it tells the history and legends of Iran from the creation of the world to the fall of the Sasanian Empire, with heroes like Rostam, Sohrab and Siavash.

Written almost entirely in pure Persian, the Shahnameh helped preserve the Persian language and Iranian identity. Ferdowsi himself wrote: “I suffered much these thirty years; with this Persian I revived Iran.”

The Tomb of Ferdowsi

In 1934, for the poet’s millennium, a monument inspired by the tomb of Cyrus the Great was built over his resting place in Tus, near Mashhad. Surrounded by gardens and decorated with scenes from the Shahnameh, it is a place of pilgrimage for lovers of Persian literature.

Kalat-e Naderi and Hezar Masjed

North of Mashhad, a natural fortress of sheer cliffs encloses a green valley: Kalat-e Naderi. Nader Shah, the 18th-century ruler of Iran, chose it to guard his treasury and built the round Khorshid Palace there. Around it rise the rugged peaks of the Hezar Masjed (“Thousand Mosques”) range.
