The Design

Narin Castle of Meybod

Rising from the center of Meybod, the mud-brick Narin Castle is one of the oldest fortresses in Iran, with origins that reach back before the arrival of Islam. Its layered walls and towers give a sweeping view over the desert town.

The Dovecote

Meybod is also known for its round dovecotes (kabootar-khaneh), tall towers with hundreds of nesting holes inside. They were built to collect pigeon droppings, a valuable natural fertilizer for the fields around the town.

Dowlatabad Garden and Its Windcatcher

Built in the 18th century, Dowlatabad Garden is home to one of the tallest windcatchers in the world, about 33 meters high. It catches the breeze and sends it down over a pool of water, cooling the rooms below. The garden is one of the sites inscribed by UNESCO as The Persian Garden.

The Persian Garden

With its long pools, rows of trees and flowing water, the Persian garden was imagined as a paradise on earth. In fact, the English word paradise comes from the old Persian word for a walled garden. The historic city of Yazd itself has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017.
