Hamedan is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth, a place where kings carved their words into stone. This Hamedan t-shirt brings together its greatest treasures in one original design.
A tribute to 2,700 years of history, from the Medes to today.
The Design
Front: the Ganjnameh inscriptions carved into the granite of Mount Alvand, finished with the province name.
Back: Mount Alvand above the ancient city of Ecbatana, framed in Persian ornament.
Ganjnameh: The Treasure Book
In a valley on the slopes of Mount Alvand, two large tablets are carved into the rock. They were made at the order of Darius the Great and his son Xerxes, and each repeats the same text in three languages: Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian.
The inscriptions praise Ahura Mazda and record the kings’ names and titles. Local people, unable to read the ancient script, believed they held the secret to a hidden treasure, which is why they were named Ganjnameh, “the Treasure Book.”
Ecbatana (Hegmataneh)
Beneath modern Hamedan lies Ecbatana, the capital of the Medes, the first Iranian empire, and later a summer capital of the Achaemenid kings. Greek historians described it as a city of seven walls, each in a different color.
Mount Alvand
Rising to around 3,500 meters, Alvand has watched over Hamedan for thousands of years. Its springs, meadows and snowy peaks have made it a favorite of hikers and poets alike. Hamedan is also the resting place of the great physician and philosopher Avicenna (Ibn Sina).
