The Design

Front: the hilltop fortress of Ziwiye with golden motifs inspired by Mannaean art, finished with the province name.

Back: the stepped village of Hawraman above the Sirwan River among Zagros peaks, framed in Persian ornament.

Ziwiye and the Golden Treasure

Near the town of Saqqez stands the hill of Ziwiye, where an ancient fortress once overlooked the valleys. In the 1940s, a remarkable hoard from around the 7th century BCE was discovered there: objects of gold, silver and ivory decorated with animals and mythical creatures, linked to the Mannaeans and their neighbors. Pieces of the Ziwiye treasure are now in museums around the world.

Hawraman (Uramanat)

In the high valleys of Hawraman, villages climb the mountainsides in steps, so that the roof of one house becomes the yard of the next. This way of life, shaped over thousands of years, was inscribed by UNESCO as the Cultural Landscape of Hawraman/Uramanat in 2021.

The Sirwan River

The Sirwan River winds through deep green valleys between the Zagros peaks, giving life to orchards, villages and some of the most beautiful landscapes in western Iran.
