More than a thousand years ago, ships loaded with silk, spices and porcelain sailed in and out of one of the busiest ports in the world, on the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf. This Bushehr t-shirt honors that story.

Siraf: Iran’s Ancient Gateway to the World

From the Sasanian era through the 10th century, Siraf was one of the greatest ports of the Indian Ocean trade. Its merchants sailed as far as China, India, the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa, and its wealth was legendary. Travelers of the time described multi-story houses built of teak and an impressive bazaar.

A powerful earthquake in the late 10th century and the rise of other ports slowly ended Siraf’s golden age. Today its ruins, harbor walls and rock-cut tombs near the town of Taheri are a quiet reminder of a time when this small stretch of coast was one of the world’s great trading hubs.

The Persian Gulf

For thousands of years, the Persian Gulf has been at the heart of Iranian trade, culture and identity. Its warm waters, palm-lined shores and island ports have inspired songs, stories and a deep sense of belonging in the people of the south.

A Seafaring Heritage

Iranian sailors were among the most skilled navigators of the ancient world, and the tradition lives on in the wooden lenj boats still built by hand along the coast of Bushehr and Hormozgan, a craft recognized by UNESCO as part of humanity’s intangible heritage.
