Shahr-e Yeri: The City of Stone Faces

Near the village of Pirazmian, close to Meshginshahr, lies Shahr-e Yeri, an Iron Age settlement dating back to the first millennium BCE. Its most famous treasures are its tall stone stelae, many of them carved with simple, striking human faces.

No one knows exactly who these figures represent. They may have been guardians, ancestors or symbols linked to ancient rituals. Standing among them on the open plain, with the mountains in the distance, it’s easy to understand why the site is often called one of the most mysterious places in Iran.

Mount Sabalan

Rising to about 4,800 meters, Sabalan is one of the highest peaks in Iran: a dormant volcano with a small lake in its summit crater. Its slopes are famous for hot springs, summer pastures used by nomadic herders and centuries of legends.

Ardabil Province

Ardabil is also home to the shrine of Sheikh Safi al-Din, the spiritual ancestor of the Safavid dynasty and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as cool mountain air that makes it one of Iran’s favorite summer escapes.
