Alamut Castle: The Eagle’s Nest

In the high Alamut valley of the Alborz Mountains, northeast of Qazvin, a fortress stands on a narrow rock with sheer cliffs on almost every side. In 1090, it became the headquarters of Hassan-i Sabbah, the leader of the Nizari Ismailis, who made it one of the most famous strongholds of the medieval world.

Alamut was also known for its remarkable library, which attracted scholars from far and wide. The castle held out for more than 160 years until the Mongol army of Hulagu Khan took it in 1256. Its story, full of courage, faith and mystery, has inspired historians, novelists and even video games ever since.

Qazvin: A Former Capital

Qazvin itself served as the capital of the Safavid Empire for much of the 16th century, and it is still known for its historic bazaar, its gardens and its role as the gateway to the Alamut valley, one of the most beautiful mountain regions in Iran.
