The Design

Front: the Portuguese Castle of Hormuz on the shore of the Persian Gulf, painted in the island’s famous colors, finished with the province name.

The Portuguese Castle of Hormuz

In 1507, Portuguese forces arrived at the island of Hormuz, then one of the richest trading ports in the world, and soon built a powerful stone fortress at its northern tip. For more than a century they controlled the trade passing through the Strait of Hormuz, until 1622, when the army of Shah Abbas I, with English help, retook the island. The ruins of the castle, with its cannons, cisterns and walls, still stand by the sea.

The Rainbow Island

Hormuz Island is famous for its soils in red, yellow, purple and white, created by mineral deposits. Its red earth, known locally as gelak, is even used in local cooking, and its colorful valleys and beaches make it one of the most unusual landscapes on Earth.

The Windcatchers of Laft

On Qeshm Island, the historic port of Laft is known for its many badgirs, or windcatchers. These elegant towers capture the sea breeze and bring it down into the houses, an ingenious form of natural air conditioning that Iranians have used for centuries in the hot south.

The Persian Gulf

For thousands of years, the waters of the Persian Gulf have connected Iran with the world. Its islands, ports and fishing villages are still full of life, color and tradition.
