Elam: One of the World’s Oldest Civilizations

From around the 4th millennium BCE, the Elamites built cities, temples and a rich culture across what is now southwestern Iran. Their capital was Susa, and their kingdom was one of the great powers of the ancient Near East for more than two thousand years. The name of Ilam Province echoes this ancient heritage.

Elamite Rock Reliefs

The Elamites carved remarkable reliefs into the rocks of the Zagros, such as the famous reliefs of Kul-e Farah near Izeh, which show processions, musicians, sacrifices and rulers. They are among the oldest rock carvings in Iran and offer a rare window into the beliefs and rituals of this ancient people.

The Razianeh Gorge and the Zagros

Ilam is a land of oak forests, deep valleys and rugged gorges. Among them, the narrow, towering walls of the Razianeh Gorge are a striking example of the raw beauty of the Zagros Mountains, still largely undiscovered by travelers.
