The Citadel of Birjand

Overlooking the city of Birjand, the province’s capital, stands its historic citadel, a reminder of the centuries when the region was an important stop on the routes between Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asia. Birjand is also known for its gardens, its old mansions and its strong tradition of craftsmanship.

The Lut Desert

To the west stretches the Lut Desert, one of the hottest and most spectacular deserts on Earth, with towering kaluts, endless dunes and black volcanic plains. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016.

Barberry and Saffron

South Khorasan produces most of Iran’s barberry (zereshk), the bright red berry that gives Persian rice dishes their famous tang. The region is also known for its saffron: Iran grows the vast majority of the world’s saffron, and fields of purple saffron flowers bloom across Khorasan every autumn.
