The Design

Cyrus the Great

Around 550 BCE, Cyrus II, known to history as Cyrus the Great, founded the Achaemenid Persian Empire, which grew to stretch from the Mediterranean to Central Asia. He is remembered not only as a conqueror but as a ruler who respected the customs and religions of the peoples he governed.

The Cyrus Cylinder, a clay cylinder inscribed after his conquest of Babylon in 539 BCE, describes the return of displaced peoples to their homelands and the restoration of their temples. Today it is often called one of the earliest declarations of human rights, and a replica stands at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The Tomb at Pasargadae

Cyrus was laid to rest at Pasargadae, his capital in today’s Fars Province. His tomb is strikingly simple: a stone chamber on six stepped platforms, standing alone on the plain. For more than 2,500 years it has drawn visitors, and Pasargadae was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. Every year, Iranians gather there on the 7th of Aban (late October) in what many call Cyrus the Great Day.

The Pomegranate

Pomegranates frame every design in this collection. In Persian culture, the pomegranate (anar) is a symbol of life, abundance and love, and it is the star of Yalda Night, when families gather on the longest night of the year to celebrate the return of light.
