The Design

The Simurgh in Persian Mythology

The Simurgh is one of the most beloved creatures of Iranian mythology. In Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, it nests on the peaks of Mount Alborz and raises the abandoned infant Zal as its own. When Zal leaves, the Simurgh gives him a few of its feathers: if he ever needs help, he only has to burn one and the great bird will come. Later, it saves Zal’s wife at the birth of their son, the hero Rostam.

Unlike the fearsome monsters of many legends, the Simurgh is a healer and protector, a symbol of wisdom and divine grace.

The Conference of the Birds

In the 12th century, the poet Attar of Nishapur wrote The Conference of the Birds, in which the birds of the world set out on a long journey to find the Simurgh, their king. Only thirty birds reach the end, and there they discover that they themselves are the Simurgh: in Persian, si morgh means “thirty birds.” It remains one of the most beautiful works of Persian literature.

The Pomegranate

Pomegranates frame every design in this collection. In Persian culture, the pomegranate (anar) is a symbol of life, abundance and love, and it is the star of Yalda Night, when families gather on the longest night of the year to celebrate the return of light.
