Reza Shah Pahlavi

Reza Shah (1878–1944) was the Shah of Iran from 1925 to 1941 and the founder of the Pahlavi dynasty. His reign was a time of rapid modernization: he built a national army, founded the University of Tehran in 1934 and completed the Trans-Iranian Railway, linking the Caspian Sea to the Persian Gulf, in 1938.

In 1935 he asked the world to call the country by the name its own people had always used: Iran, instead of Persia.

The Lion and Sun: A Symbol of Iran

The Lion and Sun (Shir-o-Khorshid) is one of the oldest and most recognizable emblems of Iran. Its roots lie in ancient astronomy, where the sun shining in the sign of Leo was a sign of power and good fortune, and the image appeared on Persian coins, tiles and manuscripts as early as the 12th and 13th centuries.

By the Qajar era in the 19th century, the lion holding a sword before the rising sun had become the official emblem of the Iranian state, and it remained at the center of the green, white and red flag for generations. For millions of Iranians around the world, it still stands for courage, light and a deep love for the homeland.

The Map of Iran in Persian Art

Filling the outline of Iran with the patterns of Persian tilework (kashi-kari) is our way of saying that the land and its art are one. These star and flower motifs echo the domes and portals of Isfahan, Shiraz and Mashhad.
