On the front, the ancient stone columns of Persia stand beneath snowy mountains, a reminder of the civilization that created it.

The Design

Front: ancient Persian columns and ruins beneath a snow-capped mountain, with cypress trees, a winding road and pomegranates, finished with the word IRAN.

Back: a Persian garden with terraced water channels and cascades, arched walls, cypress and pomegranate trees, and a mountain lake beyond, framed by winged guardians and a large IRAN banner.

The Persian Garden: The First Paradise

More than 2,500 years ago, Cyrus the Great laid out a royal garden at Pasargadae with stone water channels dividing it into four parts. This was the beginning of the Persian garden (bagh), with its geometric plan, flowing water, shade trees and pavilions, a design that later inspired gardens from Spain to India, including the gardens of the Taj Mahal.

The old Persian word pairidaeza, meaning a walled garden, passed into Greek and Latin and eventually became the English word paradise. In 2011, UNESCO inscribed nine historic gardens across Iran as The Persian Garden World Heritage Site.

Water: The Heart of the Garden

In a dry land, water was precious. Iranians built qanats, underground channels that carry water from the mountains across long distances, and brought it into gardens in pools, fountains and cascades. Their sound and coolness were as important as their beauty.

The Ancient Columns

The tall stone columns on the front recall the great palaces of the Achaemenid kings, the builders of Persepolis and Pasargadae and the first patrons of the Persian garden.

The Pomegranate

Pomegranates frame every design in this collection. In Persian culture, the pomegranate (anar) is a symbol of life, abundance and love, and it is the star of Yalda Night, when families gather on the longest night of the year to celebrate the return of light.
