The Design

Babak Castle (Qal’eh Babak)

Near the town of Kaleybar, at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters, the ruins of Babak Castle sit on a steep peak that can only be reached by a long hike and a narrow passage. Its walls follow the shape of the mountain itself, making it almost impossible to attack.

The castle is linked to Babak Khorramdin, the 9th-century leader who for around twenty years led a movement against the rule of the Abbasid Caliphate. For many Iranians, he remains a symbol of resistance and of defending one’s land and identity, and every summer people still climb to the fortress to honor his memory.

The Arasbaran Forests

Below the castle stretch the forests of Arasbaran (also known as Qaradagh), one of the richest natural areas in Iran. Its valleys are home to rare plants, wild goats, brown bears and the Caucasian black grouse, and it has been recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve since 1976.

East Azerbaijan

With its capital Tabriz, home to one of the oldest bazaars in the world, East Azerbaijan has long been a crossroads of trade, art and ideas, and its mountains carry traces of civilizations going back thousands of years.
