Long before the great Persian empires, a powerful city stood near the shores of Lake Urmia. This West Azerbaijan t-shirt celebrates that ancient past and the lake that has shaped the region for thousands of years.

The Design

Front: the blue waters of Lake Urmia and the ancient landscape around Hasanlu, finished with the province name.

Tepe Hasanlu

South of Lake Urmia, near the town of Naqadeh, rises Tepe Hasanlu, an archaeological mound that was inhabited for thousands of years. Its most famous period is the Iron Age, when it was a fortified city with grand columned halls.

Around 800 BCE, the city was attacked and burned. That sudden destruction preserved an extraordinary snapshot of daily life, and archaeologists found there the famous Golden Bowl of Hasanlu, decorated with mythological scenes and now one of the treasures of the National Museum of Iran.

Lake Urmia

Lake Urmia was once one of the largest saltwater lakes in the world, famous for its pink-tinted waters, its islands and flocks of flamingos. In recent decades it has shrunk dramatically, and protecting it has become a cause close to the hearts of many Iranians. Wearing it is also a reminder of how precious it is.

Iron Age Motifs

The ornaments in this design are inspired by the art of Iron Age Iran: animals, winged creatures and geometric patterns similar to those found on objects from Hasanlu and the ancient cultures of northwestern Iran.
