Deir-e Gachin: The Mother of Persian Caravanserais

In the heart of the Kavir National Park, southeast of Tehran, stands Deir-e Gachin, often called the “mother of Iranian caravanserais.” Its origins are believed to go back to the Sasanian era, and it was rebuilt and expanded over the following centuries as one of the key stops on the ancient trade routes.

Caravanserais were roadside inns where merchants, pilgrims and their camels could rest safely after a long day in the desert. In 2023, UNESCO recognized the Persian caravanserais, including Deir-e Gachin, as a World Heritage Site.

Dasht-e Kavir

The Dasht-e Kavir, Iran’s Great Salt Desert, covers a vast area of the central plateau. Its salt flats, dunes and clear night skies full of stars make it one of the most unforgettable landscapes in Iran.

Hoz-e Soltan Salt Lake

North of Qom, beside the highway, lies Hoz-e Soltan, a seasonal salt lake. In dry months it turns into a dazzling white plain of salt crystals; after rain, it becomes a mirror reflecting the sky.
