Susa: One of the Oldest Cities on Earth

People have lived in Susa (Shush) for more than 6,000 years. It was the capital of the Elamite civilization and later became a royal capital of the Achaemenid Empire, where Darius the Great built a magnificent palace decorated with glazed-brick friezes of archers and lions. Susa was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.

The Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System

In Shushtar, engineers of the Sasanian era built an extraordinary network of dams, canals, tunnels and water mills to divert the Karun River and irrigate the surrounding plain. Water still pours through its channels and over its rock-cut falls today. Described by UNESCO as a “masterpiece of creative genius,” it became a World Heritage Site in 2009.

Khuzestan

Khuzestan is also home to Chogha Zanbil, one of the best-preserved ziggurats in the world, and to the Karun, Iran’s largest river. Its people are known for their warmth, hospitality and delicious food.
