The Lion and Sun: A Symbol of Iran

The Lion and Sun (Shir-o-Khorshid) is one of the oldest and most recognizable emblems of Iran. Its roots lie in ancient astronomy, where the sun shining in the sign of Leo was a sign of power and good fortune, and the image appeared on Persian coins, tiles and manuscripts as early as the 12th and 13th centuries.

By the Qajar era in the 19th century, the lion holding a sword before the rising sun had become the official emblem of the Iranian state, and it remained at the center of the green, white and red flag for generations. For millions of Iranians around the world, it still stands for courage, light and a deep love for the homeland.

Mount Damavand

At 5,610 meters, Damavand is the highest peak in Iran and the tallest volcano in Asia. In the Shahnameh, the hero Fereydun chains the tyrant Zahhak inside the mountain, and ever since, Damavand has been a symbol of resistance against injustice and of Iran’s unbreakable spirit.
