The Design

Front: the Gate of All Nations with its winged, human-headed guardians (Lamassu), cypress trees on each side and a golden sun rising over snowy peaks, finished with the word IRAN.

Back: a golden Achaemenid rhyton shaped like a winged mythical creature, flanked by ibex and pomegranates under a radiant sun, with a large IRAN banner.

The Gate of All Nations

Built by Xerxes the Great in the 5th century BCE, the Gate of All Nations was the grand entrance to Persepolis. Its doorways are guarded by colossal winged bulls with human heads, known as Lamassu, protective spirits that symbolized strength, wisdom and divine protection. An inscription by Xerxes in Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian still crowns the gate.

The name says it all: delegations from Egypt, Babylon, India, Greece and dozens of other lands passed through here to honor the King of Kings, in an empire known for respecting the many peoples and cultures within it.

The Golden Rhyton

A rhyton is a ceremonial drinking vessel, and the Achaemenid goldsmiths turned it into a work of art, often ending in the shape of a winged lion, a ram or a mythical creature. Some of the most beautiful examples are treasured today in the National Museum of Iran and in museums around the world.

The Pomegranate

Pomegranates frame every design in this collection. In Persian culture, the pomegranate (anar) is a symbol of life, abundance and love, and it is the star of Yalda Night, when families gather on the longest night of the year to celebrate the return of light.
